Suddenly you're over like a book
or play, your little year, your starring role
in my life passed on to someone else.
Yes, a book Ill take down from the shelf
in years to come and leaf through and find
the sprig of meadowsweet you handed
me that late June day still scents the pages
faintly; its frothy lace will have yellowed.

Waves brings the audience to an enchanted world under the sea, where women are sensual sirens and men are entranced.
There are many stories in classical mythology about the origin of sea sirens or mermaids. They were said to be the daughters of the sea god Phorcys and Malpomene the muse of tragedy. The mermaid is found in the folklore of all western countries; she is the German Meriminni or Meerfrau, the Icelandic Marmenill, the Danish Maremind, the Irish Merrow.
It has always been believed that the song of the sea siren lured men to their death for as Hans Christian Andersen tells us none but dead men ever entered the mer-kings palace. According to late classical writers, the siren was fated to die when any sailor who heard her song passed by unharmed.
No matter what the story it is generally accepted that the sea siren has the personality and appearance of a seductive temptress. Her beauty has been said to reflect the wondrous treasures and powers of the sea itself.
Declan O'Rourke has put together a collection of his music to fit the style of this piece:
- GALILEO
- AS A BIRD
- I CAN SEE A LITTLE SOMETHING
- WE DIDNT MEAN TO GO TO SEA
- MARRYING THE SE
- CONTENTMENT
- MARRYING THE SEA
